Charlotte DeFilippo: Friends and benefits

November 27, 2007 | The Hillsider

The boss of Hillside politics is among a group of government workers who moonlight as paid “aides” to state lawmakers, qualifying for expensive health benefits and pensions, the Star-Ledger reported this weekend.

Charlotte DeFilippo, the Hillside and Union County Democratic chairwoman, earns $132,910 as director of the Union County Improvement Authority and earns another $10,000 as a legislative aide for Assemblyman Neil Cohen, D-Roselle.

Legislative aides who earn at least $10,000, as DeFilippo does, are considered full-time employees and qualify for a pension as well as medical, dental and prescription drug benefits, the Ledger reports.

The system has come under attack as a way for elected officials to reward friends, family and political allies at public expense.

In September, DeFilippo was served with five state subpoenas seeking information on her role as Cohen’s aide, her involvement with the UCIA, last year’s Democratic primary and a company she partially owns.

Should we have expected anything else? Didn’t De Fillipp’s job once pay less than half of what she pays now?

taxpayers have been paying dearly for Defilippo’s perks..but every dog has its day..no show jobs are the equivelant of theft, so she is no better than a common thief!
