Off-duty Hillside cop accused of shooting son

An 18-year veteran of the Hillside Police Department is on administrative leave after allegedly shooting his teenage son in the leg Monday night.

According to Toms River Police Chief Michael Mastronardy, Detective James Holmes returned to his Toms River home Monday around 7 p.m. during a dispute between the 17-year-old victim and the teenager’s mother. The detective became involved in the argument, which ended with Holmes firing a .40-caliber bullet into the victim’s leg. MORE

Teen Spring Challenge at W.O.K on Friday

Walter O. Krumbiegel Middle School will host a Teen Spring Challenge at the school at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 29.

There will be special presentations by Hillside resident Greg Hines, author of “The Boy Who Wanted Too Much” and record producer and owner of HardKandy Records Inc., as well as district substance abuse coordinator Melba Mullins, also of the Hillside Municipal Alliance.

Chamber of Commerce looks to honor vets

The Hillside Chamber of Commerce will hold their annual Preview of Summer Picnic at the Municipal Pool on Thursday, June 18 at 5:30 p.m.. All members and honorees are invited for free; guests are asked to pay $20 per person. Reservations can be made by mailing your information to the Hillside Chamber of Commerce, Post Office Box 954, Hillside, New Jersey 07205 by June 15.

Chamber president John Kruse and Program Vice President Ann Marie Kostakos have announced that this year the Chamber would like to honor Hillside residents who have served in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Hillside to observe Memorial Day with ceremony Monday morning

The Township of Hillside will hold a Memorial Day ceremony at 11 a.m. Monday at the Municipal Building to honor veterans whose lives were lost.

The Hillside High School ROTC and Hillside Police Department Honor Guard will participate.

Members of the Township Council and District 29 legislators state Sen. Teresa Ruiz, Assemblyman Albert Coutinho and Assemblywoman Grace Spencer are expected to attend.

A list of servicemen from Hillside who never returned is usually read aloud.

Hillside officials have put up a traffic barrier blocking traffic driving south on Newark’s Bergen Street from accessing Hillside’s Bailey Avenue, according to a report in the Star-Ledger – and Newark is not too happy about it.

UPDATE: Hillsider pursued in high-speed chase wanted on rape charge

A Hillside man who was pursued in a high-speed chase by Maryland and Delaware police last week has also been charged with raping an 11-year-old, the Sussex Countian of Delaware reports.

Chamber of Commerce asks businesses to sign up for Job Shadow Day

The Hillside Chamber of Commerce and the Hillside Board of Education is sponsoring the 10th Annual Groundhog Job Shadow Day next month and are asking township businesses and organizations to sign up by Friday, Jan. 30.

On Shadow Day, students from the high school spend a school day at a local business or municipal government or school office.

“This initiative demonstrates the connection between academics and careers, exciting students to learn by making their class work more relevant,” the Chamber’s executive director, Irene Goldie-Petras, said. “It builds community partnerships between Hillside High School students and local businesses, school personnel and Township of Hillside government departments.”

Students who sign up with at the high school guidance office will be assigned to businesses who sign up with the Chamber. Forms can be obtained by calling Chamber Chairwoman Queen King at 973-926-1773, President John Kruse at 908-964-6659, or Goldie-Petras at 908-964-0998.

Students will report to their assigned businesses on Tuesday, February 10 to meet their mentors. On Wednesday, they will report to their businesses instead of going to school. The students will be provided with disposable cameras provided by Costco to record this day. Businesses do not have to be members of the Chamber to participate.

Hillside street fair expands

Hillside’s second annual Street Fair on Saturday will feature a new and larger venue, with more activities for both children and adults.

“We were surprised and pleased with the turnout last year, and hope to have even more people this year,” said Councilman-at-large Frank Deo. “There is going to be more room for activities, like a pet ting zoo, rides and stands for businesses.”

It will be held 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the municipal playground/pool complex on Central Avenue. The rain date is Oct. 4.

John Power is a head coach for the first time.

He is taking over a team that is coming off a first-time 0-10 season.

But that doesn’t matter.

Power has been an integral part of successful programs long enough to realize the potential this Comet team has.

“So far the kids have done everything we’ve asked,” said Power, whose last two assistant coaching stints were at Union from 2003-2006 and then at Elizabeth last year.

“We’ve had a real good summer working out and lifting weights and learning the fundamentals of football.”
