Thank you for reading

The Hillsider has “been down” for quite a while now — and will remain so, indefinitely.

Maintaining a hyperlocal news site — often with a staff of one person — is not easy.

The site will remain up so readers can search through our archives.

Perhaps another township resident soon will wish to restart where we left off. Hillside needs it.

On a final note to our readers, we ask that you remain informed. Get your news from the Local Source, the Star-Ledger and the County Watchers. Demand that the media cover Hillside. Attend council and school board meetings. And take ownership of your township.

Hillside blowout for Obama

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

It’s clear who Hillside residents want in the White House: Democrat Barack Obama. As expected, the heavily Democratic town gave Obama a landslide victory over Republican John McCain.

In Hillside, Obama got 7541 votes to McCain’s 1405. Statewide, Obama won with 57 percent. McCain got 42 percent with 98% reporting.

U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg picked up a new 6-year term with 55 percent of the vote. Former congressman Dick Zimmer got 49 percent statewide with 98% of the districts reporting. In Hillside, Lautenberg got 6112 votes, while Zimmer got 1049 votes.

With Obama at the top of the ticket, it was no contest for Charlotte DeFilippo’s Democratic freeholder incumbents. The Dems will continue their monopoly hold of the freeholder board.

Guess again

Friday, September 5th, 2008

A very bitter somebody has been posting unsubstantiated rumors on the NJ.com forum about a member of the Township Council.

One of those rumors concerns this site. The angry poster claims that 2nd Ward Councilwoman Shelley-Ann Bates worked as a spy for The Hillsider.

While we did have eyes in Denver for the Democratic convention last month, it was not Councilwoman Bates who reported or wrote the articles for this site.

In fact, Bates — or any other elected official in Hillside, for that matter — has never worked for this blog. ( We do, however, welcome any of them to write for us.)

So, guess again. And no more hints from us.

Yesterday, The Hillsider got the most Web traffic in its history.

Over 500 unique users — about 200 more than the average — logged on to thehillsider.com in one day. We can’t know for sure, but it’s a safe bet ours is the most trafficked Hillside Web site.

Meanwhile, help keep us interesting: Send us news tips and pictures — to Tips @ TheHillsider.com

New name, new Web site — same deal

Monday, November 26th, 2007

Welcome to The Hillsider.

It’s the same as before — but with a different name for legal reasons.

As we explain in our “About” page, The Hillside Times was a newspaper that published in town from 1924 to 1990. Because its last publisher still holds the rights to the name, we decided to become The Hillsider.

All the content that appeared on the former site can still be found on The Hillsider.

  • An apology

    Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

An earlier post on The Hillsider about a young, former Hillsider who was shot in Newark included a comment suggesting that the media probably would not treat this victim, who in the past had trouble with the law, the same as they did three other murdered college students, who had no known criminal record.

In retrospect, The Hillsider sees that the comment could be interpreted as wrongly suggesting the young man and his family are not as deserving of sympathy as other tragic victims of violence. That was not our intention and the comment has been removed from the posting. Our sincerest apology goes out to anyone who may have been hurt by the statement.
